Learning Beyond the Classroom with Communities in Schools of Hampton Roads

This month, our team partnered with Communities in Schools of Hampton Roads, an organization providing at-risk students with resources and support to stay in school and excel academically. Their team of dedicated Site Coordinators goes beyond school walls to check in on students with educational phone calls and video chats during this critical time.

Their mission to support and keep students on track academically is so meaningful to our team at R&A. Our very own Director of Operations, Alison Johnson, has been a board member of Communities in Schools of Hampton Roads for three years and has firsthand experience with the substantial impacts this organization has on students in our community.

We participated in their online summer reading program to engage students in summer reading and activities that bring their imaginations to life within the pages of a book. We worked with a class of 15 First Grade and Kindergarten students, donating copies of the book, “When Grandma Gives You A Lemon Tree” and creating two activity sheets to enrich their minds after reading the book.

On August 18 and 19, we joined their online Zoom reading sessions to meet the students, talk about the book and complete fun activities. The enthusiasm each student had for reading and engaging in conversations about what they learned made it every bit rewarding and fulfilling. Before we left, we took a picture to show off everyone’s outfits for Wear Your Favorite Color Day!

A special thank you to Communities in Schools of Hampton Roads for allowing our team to be a part of this incredible mission. Every child deserves the chance to excel in school and become whatever they dream to be and we are honored to have been a small part of it.
